With red on one half and black-and-white stripes on the other, Wembley Stadium was rocking well before kickoff, with both sets of fans trading songs as a back-and-forth start unfolded on the pitch. Newcastle, as underdogs, chose a muscular style, with long balls and attacks funneled down the wings, whilst Liverpool's setup involved feeding off scraps.
The first meaningful attempt on goal came in the 24th minute, with Sandro Tonali shooting just wide of the post from distance, while Andy Robertson had to make a brave stop to deny Kieran Trippier. Newcastle seized the lead just before half-time, thanks to centre-back Dan Burn, who was entirely free to head in from the edge of the box after a corner, with Kelleher sluggish to react as it soared in.
Liverpool's first and only chance of the half fell to Diogo Jota, who hooked it way wide to cap off their sluggish performance. There were no substitutions at halftime, and Newcastle extended their advantage within minutes, with Alexander Isak shooting in after Jacob Murphy headed down Tino Livramento's cross.
Liverpool's defensive performance was once again terrible. Slot replied with a stunning double change, replacing Ibrahima Konate with the (again) anonymous Jota, and bringing on Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez as Ryan Gravenberch shifted to centre-back.
The dynamic quickly altered with Jones' introduction, as the midfielder forced a wonderful stop from Nick Pope in a move he initiated across the center circle.
